From The Nest: This week's updates (Week of April 13)

Good evening, Huguenot High School families.

I hope everyone has enjoyed the nice weather. I hope the pollen is not bothering you too much. Last week was Assistant Principals' Appreciation Week. I want to thank our assistant principals: Mrs. Jamia Garrett (12th grade), Ms. Latonia Kelley (11th grade), Mr. Ryan James (10th grade), and Ms. Erika Millner (9th grade). Huguenot High School has grown a lot in most areas in the last 3 years. This is because of the hard work of our amazing teachers and staff. Assistant Principals and our Dean of Students, Ms. April Wilson, have played a big part in this success. They give teachers and staff help with teaching and behavior. They also track progress, help with schedules, and, most importantly, build relationships with parents, students, teachers, and staff. This helps create a positive learning environment. We would not have had this success without them!

Here are tonight's important announcements:

SAT Day for Juniors

Juniors will take the SAT on Tuesday, April 14. Juniors must arrive at school at 9:00 a.m. They need a charged Chromebook and a writing utensil.

As juniors get ready for their senior year and the college application process, taking the SAT for free at Huguenot High School is an important first step. Tuesday's schedule will be 2nd period all morning. After that, we will have our regular 3rd and 4th periods.

SOL Schedule
We have posted the SOL test schedule below. It shows the different tests happening this month, including during SOL week. This week, from April 13 to April 17, we will give Workplace Readiness tests. These are for students who can take the test a third time. The week of April 20, we will give SOL tests for "term grads." This means seniors will take these tests on those days. Students in lower grades who need to retake tests will also test on these days. The week of April 27 will be for WorkKeys tests for students who are eligible. We will also have make-up Workplace Readiness tests. The week of May 4 will be for full school SOL testing. Students who need to test in their courses during blocks 1, 2, 3, and 4 will take them then. After that, there will be more tests for students who need to retake them, WorkKeys tests, CLEP tests, and quick retakes for eligible students.
Students must check their email often during these weeks. They might get personal updates about their testing schedules.

Spring Spirit Week
This week is SPRING SPIRIT WEEK! We are celebrating prom, getting ready for tests, signing up for the PTSA, and the start of spring as we enjoy the nice weather. We will have a different theme each day until Friday, when we will have the prom.

Test Preparation/Seat Hours
Tutoring and test preparation can now be done online. This also counts as seat time for students who need it. Tutoring is not just in person after school. Please click this document to see specific tutoring times, locations, and links for each subject. We will add more tutoring times when they become available. We also suggest that students ask their teachers about tutoring times they or other teachers might be offering in specific areas.***Students must have their Chromebook cameras on and their faces visible during tutoring. If not, they will be removed from the sessions.

Pass Rules/Smart Pass Test
Recently, Huguenot High School has seen more students walking in the halls. This happens for many reasons. Some students ask for a pass every class period to use the restroom or to meet friends. We are taking two actions to fix this:

1. Immediate Action: Teachers will limit the number of passes students can use for classes. This will happen if a student has many absences, uses too many passes, or is often late. This is not to punish students. It is to make sure students are in class and do not miss important lessons. First, teachers or school staff will call the student's caregiver to inform them about the pass limit. Then, they will add the student to a list that helps enforce the limits in the hallways. The pass limit will greatly reduce the number of passes your student receives each week.

2. Long Term: Some teachers and hallways at Huguenot will try a SmartPass system for students. We will start using this system next school year. Students can log in and ask their teacher for a digital pass. They can use their Chromebook as a pass. School staff can watch pass times and locations. They can also see information that shows when friends might ask for passes at the same time. They can see if passes were held for too long or used too often. We hope to start the test in some classrooms the week after spring break. We will share information about the experience and plans for the next school year over the summer.

Your students' teachers will contact you if there is a problem with attendance. This way, we can work together to help the student.

Important Reminder (Testing Rules)

The testing period is starting. Please remember that students cannot wear any head coverings during tests. They also cannot have any devices that can communicate or are smart devices with them while testing.

Dress Code

Spring has not officially started, but the weather is warmer than usual in early March. Please review the dress code with your child. The following information is the dress code from S.C.O.R.E.(The Richmond Public Schools Student Code of Responsible Ethics):

A student's clothing and appearance should not be indecent or create health or safety problems in the school.

Students MUST wear:

Tops and bottoms, or similar clothing like dresses.

Shoes. Sandals are allowed. However, students must wear proper athletic shoes for Physical Education (PE) class. They should also be more careful during recess. **The School Board of the City of Richmond and/or Richmond Public Schools is not responsible for any injuries that happen because students wear the wrong shoes.**

Clothing should cover private body parts, buttocks, and chest. The material should not be see-through.

Students CAN wear:

Clothing with company or sports slogans.

Tight pants (like yoga pants, leggings, and skinny jeans).

Jeans with rips, as long as underwear is not showing.

It is okay for students to wear clothes that do not match their gender.

Students CANNOT wear:

Underwear that can be seen, or swimsuits with similar designs.

Clothes with pictures or words that show drug use, alcohol, illegal activities, threats, or unfair slogans.

Clothes with hate speech, bad words, or pornography.

Pictures or words that make the learning environment feel unsafe or scary because of someone's identity or group.

Hats, caps, scarves, sweatbands, bandanas, face masks, or head coverings are not allowed inside the school building. There are some exceptions: a.) when worn for religious beliefs, b.) when worn for health or safety reasons, c.) when worn for a school-sponsored program. Face masks or coverings can be worn if needed due to situations like COVID-19 or for medical reasons.

Clear Backpacks

Students at Richmond Public Schools can only use clear book bags. If a student has a bag that is not clear, it will be taken away. Spring sports will start soon. Athletes can put their sports bags in the bins when they enter the building. There are only a few months of school left. We still have clear backpack replacements. You can also find many different clear book bags on online stores like Amazon. These bags have different prices. For more information, including what types of clear book bags are allowed, clickHERE for the Richmond Public Schools clear book bag rules.

Outside Food or Drink

This is a reminder that students cannot bring food or drinks from outside into the school. This rule does not apply to food packed for lunch in their backpack before they arrive at school. This means food bought or packed before school and kept in their backpacks when they enter the school is allowed. Also, drinks with lids that can be removed, are not sealed, or are in glass containers are not allowed. Students who leave the technical center and return to school on their own cannot bring outside food into the building when they come back.

Cell Phones

Cell phones and headphones must be turned off and put away all day(from the first bell to the last bell). At Huguenot High School, students must put their cell phones in the hanging sleeves in each classroom during class. School leaders are visiting classrooms to check that cell phones are placed in the sleeves correctly.

Outside Devices (Computers/Tablets)

This is a reminder that iPads, computers, tablets, or other devices besides Chromebooks are not allowed at school. Students who bring these devices may have them taken away.

Thank you. Stay safe. We hope to see you at school tomorrow.
