Weekly Updates

Sunday 1-12-25
Good Evening Huguenot High School Families,
We have missed you and can't wait to start 2025 off on a positive footing. As Superintendent Kamras has shared in his updated message through RPS Direct, all buildings are fully operational, cleaned, and ready for faculty, staff, and students tomorrow. Safe water has been fully restored and all systems have been flushed and new filters are present in all our drinking stations. Please also take note in the message that was sent out from the division of the following changes:
-January 15 and February 18 are now full school days for students.
-January 24 is now the end to the first semester
-January 27 is now the beginning of the second semester
Below are important messages concerning the Virginia Cell Phone Free Schools Executive Order that starts tomorrow and our 5 Ideals which are expectations for students in all areas of the building. Please take a moment to re-read the message from last week below and reinforce these expectations with your students.
**Reviewing Cell Phone Policy and HHS Expectations at Home**
We have missed our students and hope everyone has had a restful break and is ready to return to finish the first semester on a positive note. We know that it can take students a little while to re-accustom themselves to school after a long break, therefore, I am reaching out tonight directly to our families in asking for your continued help and partnership in supporting expectations at Huguenot High School. As outlined in multiple communications, from the moment students enter the school until they leave, cell phones must be away at all times each day. We have compiled our expectations for students for all areas/environments of the building that are aligned with the 5 Ideals of Huguenot High School. By following these 5 Ideals, students will be Respectful, Responsible, Accountable, Courteous, and Consistent. Please review the attached document with your students before they return to school. You will also notice that cell phone expectations are embedded under the “Accountable” ideal.
Please reference the attached 5 Ideals of HHS (Spanish translation is at the bottom of the single document), and visit rmd.me/jJIVKtjo8dd with your students to review the cell phone policy. There is a two-pager in both English and Spanish on the link that is very helpful.
Faculty and staff will be consistently enforcing the cell phone policy at all times during the school day. Additionally, in anticipation that we may see more students requesting passes, teachers have been asked by the administration to monitor hall pass usage and report to parents any excessive hall pass requests. (Teachers are aware of students who have medical conditions that require additional hall passes).
I know that making sure phones are away and not in use each day, every day, all day, will not be easy for everyone; however, the rewards will be many. Cell phones, social media use, texting, and gaming are the number one distractions to instruction that we observe in our classrooms. Additionally, cell phone use in the building contributes to student conflict. We look forward to partnering with our parents, teachers, and students to make sure that we are maintaining the safest, most effective cell phone-free learning environment possible as is now mandated by the state. If you, as a caregiver, need to get in touch with your student, please call the school at 804-320-7967, or email their teacher or counselor. Please email me Dr. Michael Massa, principal, (mmassa2@rvaschools.net), or your student’s grade level administrator, with any questions and we will get back to you as soon as possible.
We look forward to seeing all of you tomorrow!
Dr. Michael Massa
Principal, Huguenot High School
